Accordion shutter maintenance and lubrication is not time consuming, or difficult. There isn’t that much to them, and so the periodic task of maintaining them won’t be physically taxing or time consuming for you to do yourself. You’re going to want them to be easy to close up before a storm, so you need to follow this tutorial on Accordion Shutter Maintenance. You should open and close your shutters* for inspection and maintenance every couple of months or more often.
Accordion Shutter Maintenance Points
There are two main accordion shutter maintenance points. Every one of the folds of the “accordion” has a joint and you need to keep those joints or hinges clean all the time.
To keep the joints of your storm shutters operable, spray them down with fresh water. *Work the shutters back and forth and rinse them well because salt and grime gets into all those joints.
1. Hinges / Joints
(0:40) When the accordion shutter is in the closed position, the inside fold’s “hinge” opens so that you can clean and wipe it out with a sponge and whatever dish soap you have. Wipe down all of the exposed inner joints while the shutter is in this closed position.
(0:50) Let the wiped joints dry and then use 100% silicone spray, (never WD40 – never any oily petroleum base spray), and spray those joints from top to bottom on the inside “hinge” of each fold. Once each of the inner fold joints are sprayed, *open and close the shutter to work the silicone in.
(1:20) When your shutter is in the open position, the other joint is open and ready for cleaning with your sponge and soapy water.
(1:35) Once those joints dry, use your 100% silicone spray to lubricate them from top to bottom. Once again *work the shutter open and closed to work in the silicone.
*As you open and close the shutters keep in mind that they are very strong hurricane shutters, you’re not going to hurt them. No need to really be gentle, so you can do this motion quickly.
2. Wheels In Top Track
The weight of accordion shutters hangs down from the top wheels so those wheels in the top track need to be kept cleaned and lubricated with your 100% silicone spray also. Follow the same process of rinsing and drying and spraying with the silicone, but cover your eyes when spraying upward into that track.
That’s how you should maintain your accordion hurricane shutters and keep them protected so that they can protect you. This process is important in every geographical area, but critical for shutters on beach-side buildings. I hope this tutorial about accordion shutter maintenance video helps keep your family safe.
